Apalachicola Maritime Museum

The museum was founded “to celebrate and preserve the maritime history of Apalachicola in a hands-on learning environment with active, sailing, boat building, restoration and educational displays.” The primary exhibit is the 58 foot wooden ketch, Quark, designed by L. Francis Herreshoff. The Quark has since been renamed the Heritage of Apalachicola to reflect its new mission of education. The museum is located near the bridge at 103 Water Street in downtown Apalachicola.

 

 

 


Cape St. George Light and St. George Island Visitor Center & Lighthouse Museum

Built in 1852, this lighthouse stood on Little St. George Island for more than 150 years before collapsing in the surf in October of 2005.  Preserved bricks and original pieces of the iron lantern room will serve as patterns for the ongoing lighthouse reconstruction.  The reconstructed lighthouse will stand at St. George Lighthouse Park in the center of St. George Island, where the new lantern room currently can be viewed.  The Visitor Center is open daily (except Wednesdays) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

 

 

 

 


Crooked River Lighthouse

The lighthouse was built in 1895 to replace the one on Dog Island destroyed in a hurricane in 1873. The fully-restored lighthouse is located two miles west of Tillie Miller Bridge in the city of Carrabelle.

 
Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum

Established in 1942 for the sole purpose of training amphibious soldiers and their support groups, this camp trained a quarter of a million men, closing in June of 1946. Located at the Carrabelle. Handicap accessible. Admission by donation. Tours welcome.


Chestnut Street Cemetery
Established in 1831, the cemetery’s funerary art reflects the ethnic diversity of the community.  Located on Highway 98 between 6th and 8th Streets in Apalachicola.

Fort Gadsden Historic Site

Located on the east bank of the Apalachicola River approximately 45 minutes north of Eastpoint, accessed by Highway 65. The site interprets the role of Native and African Americans during the early 1800s. This site is managed as part of the Apalachicola National Forest.


John Gorrie Museum State Park

Contains a replica of the ice machine created and patented in 1851 by Dr. John Gorrie in an attempt to cool his yellow fever patients. His invention later because the basis for the ice industry and air conditioning. Exhibits also document the history of Apalachicola.  Open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 


The Raney House Museum

Built in 1838 for cotton commission merchant David Greenway Raney, this Greek Revival mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Homes. The museum contains furniture, documents and artifacts of the 19th century. It is open to the public 1:00 pm--4:00 pm Sunday - Friday; and 10:00 am--4:00 pm on Saturdays. Admission is free. 


The Orman House Museum

Built in 1838 by Thomas Orman, this antebellum home overlooks the Apalachicola River, and was used for both business and social gatherings. The house features details of both federal and Greek revival styles with wooden mantelpieces, molded plaster cornices, and wide heart-pine floorboards. The house is open 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and closed 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m., Thursday through Monday, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. For a small fee, guided tours are offered hourly, except at 12:00 p.m.


Veterans Memorial Plaza

The highlight of the plaza is the bronze replica statue, known as the Three Soldiers, Detail. The memorial was designed by the late Frederick Hart, a renowned American sculptor, as a tribute to Vietnam veterans. The original stands on the National Mall in Washington DC’s Constitution Gardens.  Apalachicola is the only city in the US, other than Washington DC, to feature a partial replica of the bronze sculpture. The sculpture depicts a realistic image of Vietnam servicemen from various ethnic backgrounds and is a symbol of their courage and devotion to their country. The statue is a culmination of a seven year, million dollar effort.
